London Lambeth Rotarian Sheila Wilkes was recently honoured for her commitment to helping to ERADICATE POLIO from the WORLD. PolioPlus is Rotary International's signature program launched in 1985 to immunize all children against polio. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has contributed over US$2.9 billion, helping reduce global polio cases by 99.9% while funding critical health infrastructure worldwide. In Rotary District 6330 (including London Lambeth), the PolioPlus Society recognizes members who commit to an annual/recurring gift to the PolioPlus/Polio Fund . Thank you Sheila for saving children and doing good in the world!

The guest speaker at our May 12 meeting was Larry Marrow from 519 Pursuit, a London based organization working with the homeless and people living on the street. Larry shared how funding in London from all levels of government is extremely precarious at present and is always very uncertain, impacting staff (1 FT, 3 PT) and volunteers. Rotary helps those in need - locally, regionally and around the world.

At their Wine & Dinner Tasting event held on May 24 at the London Civic Gardens on Springbank Drive, Lambeth Rotarians ran a ‘Heads & Tails’ fundraiser. The proceeds of the fundraiser all went to support the London Ronald McDonald House on Baseline Road. Although RMH receives a good portion of their funding from McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited, more is needed to cover all their needs. The rest comes from community donations and fundraising efforts. They receive no government funding. That is why Lambeth Rotarians decided to dedicate the proceeds of their ‘Heads & Tails’ fundraiser to RMH London. Pictured are Lambeth Rotarians, Bobbie Robinson and her sister Ann Nicol (in black) with some Hyde Park Rotarians (in red).

In 1922, U.S. Rotarians organised an attendance contest; the challenge was that the losing clubs would join in giving the winning club a prize. The Rotary Club of New York City was declared the winner and to them was awarded as a prize a bell from a popular patrol boat, which was placed on wood that came from HMS "Victory", Admiral Nelson's vessel at the battle of Trafalgar. Since then, the bell used in Rotary meetings started to represent, as on the ships, order, discipline and the time to guide us through the weekly hour and a half meetings. The bell informs us with its sound the beginning of the Rotary meeting and at the closure of the regular club meeting.

LONDON-LAMBETH ROTARY CLUB AGAIN HOSTS THE HARVESTFEST PANCAKE BREAKFAST Once again, for their 28th consecutive year, the London-Lambeth Rotary Club hosted the Pancake Breakfast on Lambeth’s Harvestfest weekend. In all, there were about 370 people served. The Club would like to thank the Lambeth Harvestfest Committee for once again providing Rotary with this annual opportunity to serve the Lambeth community. The Lambeth Rotarians would also like to thank Rob Annable of the Village Pantry for providing the scrumptious sausages; Lambeth’s Tim Hortons for providing the coffee; Clarke’s Maple Syrup for providing the real maple syrup to make the pancakes tasty; and the Thompson’s of Can-Am RV Centre for providing the portable cooking grills and the trailer awning to keep the cooks dry during the rain. All these generous donations allowed Rotary to hand over even more of the breakfast proceeds to the Harvestfest Committee for use in next year’s Harvestfest. The Club also participated in the parade with a float promoting Rotarys new motto THE MAGIC OF ROTARY.

THE LAMBETH LIGHTS HAVE ARRIVED! Last spring, the Rotary Club of London-Lambeth kicked off a community-wide fund-raising project to replace the (tired) Main Street festive lights. Within weeks, Lambeth-and-area businesses, community groups and individuals came together and raised thousands of dollars to fund not only the newly designed fixtures but also their initial installation costs. The lights, sourced within Canada, have arrived and have passed their tests. Keep an eye out for the lights on Main St. shortly after Remembrance Day (November 11). Congratulations and thanks to the many generous donors and to the Lambeth Rotarians who helped make this happen. Merry Christmas, Lambeth! CLICK READ MORE to see list of Donors

Support Given to L'Arche Lambeth
Posted by Mike MacKinnon on Aug 07, 2018
At our regular club meeting on July 24, the members and guests were treated to an update talk from L'Arche London's executive director Marietta Drost. Marietta provided the Club with information about the activities taking place in the new Lambeth Gathering Place, including the Thursday morning Café that all are welcome to visit. Club President Geoff Faul, and indeed the entire club, was pleased to present a cheque to L'Arche London for $1,000 in order to assist with improvements to sound baffling systems being installed. The Club had previously supported L'Arche with a $1,000 donation for the first part of those meeting room improvements, which had been successfully carried out through a combination of supporting donations, some hired know-how, and considerable volunteer effort to install. And we are pleased to help again now!

Police Chief Duncan
Posted by David Brent on Apr 15, 2013

Chief Duncan described Policing in London and the challenges that are faced by our community. London is a relatively safe city but we do have to an extent all the concerns of larger cities.
He emphasized that an ever increasing amount of police time is spent on dealing with citizens with mental problems.
Policing is a vital part of a cities needs and London’s Police force is one of the best.
