Lambeth Rotary Supports BRIO Music Summer Program

Thanks to a donation from the Rotary Club of London Lambeth, the Brio Music program will be extended to include two summer camps. The program is offered to elementary school children from Trafalgar, Aberdeen, Princess Elisabeth and Knollwood Park schools in London.

"The support of the Rotary Club will allow us to offer two, week long morning camps, one each during July and August”, said Ashley Dickey, Program Director of Brio. “It not only will provide a safe place for part of the summer, it also will help them maintain their musical and team skills for the full program that will restart in the fall.”

Maintaining the Musical Momentum

Brio Music is an El-Sistema inspired, after school program for young children. The program is designed to build self-esteem and positive self-image through the vehicle of music and is aimed at students who otherwise might not be able to afford music lessons. The children receive training in instruments, voice and mallet in a safe and family oriented environment. Complementing the music instruction is a “Healthy Me” component where the children receive healthy snacks and discuss nutrition, personal hygiene and self-respect.

Sheila Wilkes, 2013/2014 Lambeth Rotary President stated, “Brio Music fits right into several areas of focus for Rotary, specifically: Basic Education and Literacy; Maternal and Child Health; and Economic and Community Development”.

As a teacher, it is really rewarding to see the changes in the children”, stated Laura Gilbert, an Ontario Certified Music teacher with the program. “Some started the year as shy but sometimes wild kids. They ended the year with a concert where they were outgoing and confident musicians in front of an audience of over 50. I am glad Rotary is funding the summer camps to help maintain the momentum for the next school year.

A teacher from one of the schools sending children commented, “I am so impressed that this is a FREE program.  Many of my students would never get the chance to attend group music lessons if it weren't for Brio. Parents can see the benefits of this program behaviourally, socially and musically and are very supportive of this great opportunity for their children.  My students are very much looking forward to attending Brio summer camp this year…”
